A review of the DVR D011 car dash camera. MORE INFO BELOW.... Let me explain a pithy comment I made in this video that I must have worded in a way so that it doesn't translate well or makes me sound flippant or arrogant - this was not my intention. The sentence in question is where I say at the 1 min 7 sec mark "although I've been driving for 20 years and I've never crashed into anything, so you would have to use it an awful lot of be a very bad driver to get the use out of it that it's intended for". People regularly comment, that it's not down to how I drive, it's the other drivers...or words to that effect. This is misunderstanding the sentiment that I was trying to convey, so let me elaborate on the message that I was trying to get across. Have you seen those Russian car crash videos on youtube, they are crazy aren't they. It makes you think that everyone in Russia must be crashing all the time. How about the Worlds Scariest Police Chases....they always show lots of amazing crashes. Some people buy these cameras thinking that in no time they'll have an amazing car crash video that they can post on youtube or sell to the TV news. However, ask yourself how many crashes you've actually seen or been involved in whilst driving. and also ask yourself how many of these crashes happened in front of your car so that a camera mounted on the windscreen would have captured the crash on video. www.learningdslrvideo.com Do you feel like me that you become somewhat of a master of Lightroom and can make your pictures just rock by turning them from this in to this, or this in to this, but when it comes to using the Premiere or Final Cut you don't seem to get the same results? With the new Lightroom 4 beta you can kind of feel that power again with your DSLR video footage. With Lightroom 4 for the first time you can playback videos after you import your card you can also trim the footage non-destructively. You can also take a frame grab or a hero shot if you will from the video and then make all the setting changes you want save that to a preset and then apply that preset to the video clip. DSLR video with the Canon cameras can easily over saturate a red shirt, desaturating the shirt in Premiere can take a little bit of time but Lightroom I can do it almost instantly. www.learningdslrvideo.com A while back I did a BTS video of a camera crew using the RED Epic, after that I got an email from James Drake who is co-owner of 5kInsight.com, a local RED camera rental house in Denver, asking if I would like to see one and try it out. I was like, "Sure you bet, that would be fun". So we met up at Denver's Union Station a few days ago and James gave me a tutorial on how to shoot with it which you will see here, after that I got to shoot a video interview with James using his Epic. It's an interesting interview and tutorial because James relates a lot stuff on the RED Epic to shooting with a DSLR since he owns a Canon 5D as well. I think this tutorial is worth watching or at least bookmarking because some of you in the future will need to rent one of these to intermix footage with your DSLR or do an entire shoot with it when you client has the budget for it. Right now I'm in the process of taking the Epic's footage from the interview and learning the workflow so I can publish the interview pretty soon, so keep an eye out for it. I wanted say thanks to Patrick Downey who is James assistant that was nice enough to take my Canon T2i and film this tutorial for me. If you noticed the audio change during the tutorial, this because Patrick had to change cards and the second part of the audio was not done on a Magic Lantern card so you can heard the AGC in action.

This is an SC-200 GPS Mouse, advertised as a Speed Camera Advisor for your car. Currently available from Maplins (UK) for £14.99. I have found out where on the PCB the serial data could be read from the GPS module. Using pins 0 and 1 (Serial RX/TX) on the Arduino and reading data in at 38400 baud you can see the NMEA data coming directly off the GPS module. This GPS unit is going to be used in a high altitude balloon attempt to send an balloon with a digital camera to the edge of space. The GPS data will be read by an Arduino and transmitted down a low power RF link to enable tracking and recovery of the payload. Next stage is to solder some wires to it, then send the serial data over an 433MHz RF link.

By standing out in the garden and shooting back in through a window you can achieve beautiful even frontal lighting which would be expensive to achieve in a studio.
